May is Melanoma Awareness Month—a time to shine a light on the importance of early detection and prevention of melanoma and skin cancer. Throughout the month, landmarks across Canada will shine in Melanoma Canada’s signature red, with some illuminated in black and red, to raise awareness and show support for those affected.

Each year, over 91,000 people in Canada are diagnosed with melanoma or skin cancer. Tragically, three to four people die from melanoma each day. While it’s often associated with fair skin, melanoma doesn’t discriminate. It can affect anyone—regardless of age, race, or gender—and it can appear on any part of the body, even areas that aren’t regularly exposed to the sun. You can reduce the risk of melanoma and skin cancer by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen, covering up, seeking shade, and getting to know your skin. Monthly skin checks are one of the most effective ways to catch melanoma early. If you notice anything new or changing, speak with a healthcare professional.
