Correction — September 10, 2026: Melanoma Canada is issuing a correction to our recent statement regarding new Canadian tariffs on sunscreen imported from the United States.
Our original statement indicated that sunscreen products imported from the United States were subject to a new 50% tariff that took effect on September 8, 2026. Following further review of the Government of Canada’s detailed tariff classifications, we have determined that this was not accurate.
The 50% tariff applies to specific products within the broader skin-care and cosmetic category, including certain lip products. While the broader Harmonized System heading references sunscreen and sun-tan preparations, conventional sunscreen is not subject to the new 50% tariff under this measure. Certain U.S.-origin sunscreen products remain subject to the previously imposed 25% counter-tariff.
We regret the error and any confusion our earlier statement may have caused.
Our underlying concern, however, remains unchanged. Sunscreen is an important skin cancer prevention tool, and Melanoma Canada believes governments should be working to make effective sun protection more affordable and accessible – not more expensive.
We continue to advocate for the removal of taxes and tariffs on sunscreen and other essential sun-protection products and for policies that make it easier for all Canadians to protect themselves and their families from preventable skin cancers.
