Why It’s Important to Practice Sun Safety

The leading cause of melanoma is over exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources. Overexposure to the sun and other sources of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are known to cause harm to the skin, eyes and immune system. Melanoma is a very serious and potentially deadly form of skin cancer and is one of the few cancers with incidence rates on the rise. Last year over 7,800 Canadians were diagnosed with melanoma and over 1,300 died as a result of the disease.

As the weather warms up please be sure to be safe in the sun. To date there is not a definitive body of evidence that links sunlight to successful treatment of COVID-19 infection. Be sure to wear broad spectrum UVA and UVB protective sunscreen with a high SPF, and ensure to apply it generously and frequently. Cover up with appropriate clothing, and try and stay out of the sun during peak hours.
