When a close friend suggested we register our 1955 Ford Crown Victoria for the Yorkville Exotic Car Show, we hesitated. Sure, we love our vintage beauty in its gleaming pink and white, polished chrome, and timeless charm but how would it stack up against rows of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches?

But then we learned something that instantly changed our perspective: the event wasn’t just about showcasing incredible cars—it was a fundraiser to support those affected by melanoma and skin cancer. Suddenly, this wasn’t just a car show. It was personal.

Rose, had lost a dear co-worker and friend, Gary, to Melanoma. Gary was a TTC driver who worked closely with Rose for many years. He was more than just a colleague, he was one of her favourite people. When she heard of his diagnosis, the news was shocking. In a matter of weeks, he went from diagnosis to surgery and chemotherapy. Sadly, just a few months later, he lost his battle.

Gary’s passing left a void that’s still felt to this day.  Rose still remains in close contact with his wife Maria and his children cherishing the bond that grew through years of friendship. So when we found out the Yorkville Exotic Car Show supported the melanoma and skin cancer community, we knew we had to be a part of it, not just for the love of classic cars, but in memory of Gary.

After registering, we immediately began reaching out to family, friends, and colleagues, spreading the word and collecting donations. That first year, we had over 40 donors. The next year, we were stunned and deeply moved to see over 180 people contribute. That’s 180 people who became more aware of the dangers of melanoma and the importance of protecting ourselves from the sun’s harmful rays. As transit workers ourselves, we were surprised by how many colleagues had no idea how at-risk they were.

Then came show day.

To be honest, standing among the exotic supercars, we felt a little out of place. But as the day unfolded, something amazing happened. Our 1955 Crown Victoria began to draw a crowd and never lost it. People stopped in their tracks to take photos, ask questions, and share stories.

We heard from folks who remembered riding in cars just like ours during their childhood. Some said it reminded them of their grandparents. Others simply smiled, visibly transported back in time. Watching older visitors light up with joy and nostalgia was worth more than we could ever describe.

It felt like, for a moment, our car helped bridge generations—and sparked memories people had long tucked away.

In our eyes, the Crown Vic didn’t just “fit in” at the Yorkville Exotic Car Show, it stole the show. And more importantly, it helped amplify a cause that means everything to us.

The event itself is spectacular, seamlessly organized by Falyn Katz, the Melanoma Canada team, and the Yorkville BIA. From classic cruisers to modern-day marvels, every vehicle is displayed with care, security, and passion. It’s a day for car lovers, families, and anyone who appreciates community coming together for something.

We’re proud to say that over the last few years, we’ve raised more than $11,000 in Gary’s memory. And our fundraising has already begun this year . With the help of fellow transit workers, union members, friends, family and supporters from all walks of life, we’re building more than a tribute—we’re building awareness and hope.

Our journey with the Crown Victoria has become more than just about preserving a piece of automotive history—it’s about honouring a friend, raising awareness, and inspiring others to protect themselves, and supporting melanoma and skin cancer education, support services, and advocacy efforts.

We can’t wait to roll in again this year—and every year after. Because for us, this isn’t just a car show.

It’s a tribute.
