Facing a skin cancer diagnosis is undoubtedly one of life’s toughest challenges, both physically and emotionally. However, staying active during cancer treatment can have numerous benefits for your overall well-being, including boosting your mood and improving your quality of lifei

A study of over 100 clinical trials conducted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology found that staying active improved symptoms and side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. It also found that exercise and staying physically active also helped those who had surgery to recover faster with fewer complicationsii. It’s truly amazing how something so simple as staying active can make such a difference!

Here are some simple tips on how to stay active while dealing with melanoma and skin cancer:

  1. Consult with Your Healthcare Team: Before starting any exercise regimen, it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare team, including your oncologist and a certified exercise specialist. They can provide personalized recommendations tailored to your specific skin cancer type, treatment plan, and overall health condition.
  2. Start Slowly: If you were not active before your diagnosis, start slowly and gradually increase your activity level. Even light activities like walking or gentle stretching can make a significant difference in how you feel. Adjust the duration of your exercise if you feel low on energy.
  3. Choose Activities You Enjoy: Find activities that you enjoy and that match your current abilities. Whether it’s walking, swimming, yoga, or gardening, the key is to engage in activities that bring you joy and satisfaction. Explore the right exercises for you.
  4. Participate in Strides for Melanoma: Being active and social while contributing to a cause are great ways to increase motivation. 5. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels during and after physical activity. It’s normal to experience fatigue, but if you feel overly exhausted or experience pain, it’s essential to rest, modify your activities accordingly, and check in with your healthcare team. Understand that your energy levels may fluctuate throughout your treatment, and it’s okay to adjust your activity level accordingly. Some days you may feel more energetic, while others may require more rest.
  6. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Proper hydration and nutrition are essential for maintaining your energy levels and supporting your body during skin cancer treatment. Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  7. Set Realistic Goals: Set achievable goals for yourself and celebrate your progress along the way. Whether it’s increasing the duration of your walks or trying a new exercise class, each milestone is a testament to your strength and resilience.
  8. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or Melanoma Canada’s monthly support group for encouragement and motivation. Having a strong support system can make a significant difference in your journey towards staying active and healthy.
  9. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga to reduce stress and promote relaxation. A calm mind can help you better cope with the challenges of cancer treatment. To get started, follow along with our Yoga and Somatic Healing video available here.
