Sunscreen seems simple enough, but most people don’t use it properly. Even small mistakes can make a big difference in how much protection you get. Here are the top five mistakes you might be making, and how to fix them.

  1. Using too little: Most people apply less than half of what they need. Experts recommend about 30 millilitres (roughly a shot glass full) to cover an adult’s whole body. For your face and neck, two finger-lengths of sunscreen is usually enough. If you use less, the SPF on the bottle doesn’t match the protection you’re getting.
  1. Missing Key Spots: Some areas are easy to forget: the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, your scalp, and the tops of your feet. These areas often burn first and are common sites for skin cancer. Take a few extra minutes to make sure every exposed area is covered before you head outside.
  1. Not reapplying: Sunscreen doesn’t last all day. It wears off with sweat, swimming, and even just time in the sun. To stay protected, reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Keeping a travel-sized bottle in your bag or car makes it easier to stay consistent.
  1. Relying on sunscreen alone: Sunscreen works best when it’s part of a bigger sun-safety plan. Seek shade between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when UV radiation is at it’s peak, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and choose lightweight long sleeves when possible. Think of sunscreen as one part of your routine, not the whole plan.
  1. Choosing the wrong sunscreen: Using the wrong product can undo your good intentions. Look for the words “broad-spectrum” and SPF 50 or higher. Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA rays (which cause premature aging) and UVB rays (which cause burns). Always check the expiry date; old sunscreen can lose its strength. If you have sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are gentle and reliable choices.

Getting sunscreen right doesn’t have to be complicated. Use enough, cover every area, reapply often, combine it with clothing and shade, and choose a product that you like and truly protects. These small habits can make a lifelong difference in keeping your skin healthy.

Sun protection isn’t just for summer; it’s a year-round habit that keeps your skin strong, radiant, and safe. Every time you take a moment to apply sunscreen properly, you’re investing in your future self.
